About the role
You may be surprised to hear that in addition to its many other activities, the National Trust has a very large and growing commercial operation with a turnover in excess of £100m – everything from shops to hotels – all designed to provide vital funds to conserve the wonderful places in our care. As an astute commercial thinker with a passion for conservation, you’ll understand this better than most. Without generating revenue, without a healthy surplus to support our work, we won’t survive.
You’ll be a financial leader who, using your experience in assisting businesses to grow, will help the Trust achieve its strategic goals. Of course, you won’t just be thinking about money. You will need to take a balanced long-term view to help properties, and ultimately the Trust as a whole, to thrive. As one example, developing the commercial operations at our special places, you’ll ensure that property teams have the practical and professional financial support they need. Insight is key, as is the ability to make an immediate – and lasting – impression. We’ll look to you to manage a team of Finance Business Partners, making sure that we’re delivering an excellent finance business partnership in your region. When it comes to your team, you’ll ensure that they have the skills and experience needed to deliver a service that helps properties to achieve their strategic objectives. But you won’t simply manage: influential and credible, you’ll work with the Director of the Wales to formulate strategies and plans to deliver their objectives.
As well as championing the investment appraisal processes in your area, you’ll help colleagues to review, simplify and improve the finance processes. Continuous improvement and optimal performance will be behind everything you do. You’ll be a point of expertise for colleagues in your region too, offering advice, support and insight. But more than that, you’ll challenge colleagues where necessary, suggesting new ways of working in line with the long-term nature of our core purpose.
You’re commercially minded and financially astute. You’ll have a brilliant business brain, perfectly complemented by an impressive breadth of strategic financial and business knowledge and experience. You’ll be well-versed in developing and delivering strategies and solutions to support financial decision-making too. In fact, you pride yourself on your ability to think strategically and understand the broader organisational issues.
When it comes to presenting financials, you make even the most complex data clear and simple to understand. Equally, you’ll have the confidence and intellect to challenge conventional thinking and current ways of working. To your team, you’ll be an inspiring leader. A point of expertise and a guiding hand. You’re also quick to build influential, collaborative working relationships with senior colleagues.
