Job description

The Ministry of Defence is seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the finance organisation of the new Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) - created to procure and support nuclear submarines in the UK through life, from initial concept to decommissioning. This is work of unparalleled strategic importance and represents a national investment of comparable scale to Crossrail or HS2. A standalone entity within the Ministry of Defence, the new Submarine Delivery Agency will be a high‐performing organisation, bringing together existing expertise with heightened managerial, commercial and procurement capability to ensure the excellence and cost efficient delivery of the UK’s nuclear submarine assets for decades to come.

The new CFO will report directly to the CEO and will be a member of the CEO’s Senior Leadership Team and SDA Executive Committee. He or she will have overall responsibility for all aspects of finance for the Agency including budgeting and financial reporting, controls, financial planning and analysis, risk management, assurance, financial statements and audit. They will also provide strategic and financial guidance to ensure that the Submarine Delivery Agency’s activities and programmes are delivered cost-efficiently on the basis of sound business and investment cases, and that its financial commitments are fully funded.

They will work closely with the Agency’s Executive Committee, MOD’s Director General Nuclear and Navy Command, other Government bodies (such as HM Treasury and UK Government and Investments) in managing the interests of government more broadly, and strategic industry partners and suppliers. This is a hugely exciting, challenging and rewarding position in which decisions over the coming years will potentially carry weight for the next 50 years and beyond.

We are interested to hear from applicants with strong financial leadership and management experience developed in large scale, complex, successful project delivery environments. We are seeking an outstanding individual, with a robust, commercial and dynamic approach, to drive high levels of performance and cost-efficiency in an organisation of paramount importance to the future security of this country.

If you think you have the skills, experience and ambition that we are looking for, we’d love to hear from you.
